If you've sat in a therapy room and spent the first twenty minutes explaining what queer means, or felt the weight of someone’s polite confusion, you already know what it costs to be unseen. LGBTQ+ affirming therapy in Vancouver shouldn't start with education. It should start with you.
You're running on empty, managing anxiety, depression, or burnout that's been quietly shaped by what it takes to move through a world that wasn't built with you in mind. You're navigating relationships that don't fit the standard script: queer partnerships, chosen family, or the push and pull of intimacy and connection on your own terms. You're carrying the cumulative weight of minority stress, family estrangement, or the slow drain of performing a version of yourself that doesn't quite fit. You want to work with someone who already understands the terrain, not someone who needs you to map it for them first.
This space is for you if...
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy isn't a separate kind of therapy. It's therapy that doesn't ask you to bracket your identity at the door. Depending on what brings you in, we might explore:
Anxiety, depression, and burnout in the context of queer experience
Queer relationships, attachment, and intimacy, including navigating connection outside conventional structures
Minority stress, internalized shame, and the cumulative effects of discrimination
Sexual and gender identity, including coming out at any stage of life
Family estrangement and chosen family dynamics
Self-esteem and personal growth
What we work on together
I'm phil (he/him), a gay man and queer therapist offering in-person therapy in Vancouver and virtual sessions across BC and Ontario. I bring my own experience of navigating identity, relationships, and belonging into the room, not to centre my story, but because it means you don't have to start from scratch.
Whether you want to meet in person in East Vancouver or connect virtually from wherever you are in BC or Ontario, both options are available. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and attachment-informed approaches, we work toward something more grounded, more connected, and more fully yours.
FAQs
Do I have to identify as LGBTQ+ to work with you?
1
No. While my practice is built around affirming queer and 2SLGBTQ+ experience, I also work with people who are questioning, exploring, or who simply want a therapist who won't flinch at complexity. If you're wondering whether you belong here, you probably do.
What makes LGBTQ+ affirming therapy different from regular therapy?
2
Affirming therapy means your identity isn't treated as the problem to be solved or explained. A queer-affirming therapist already understands the landscape (minority stress, chosen family, navigating systems that weren't designed with you in mind), so the conversation can start somewhere more useful.
Do you offer in-person therapy in Vancouver?
3
Yes. I offer in-person sessions in East Vancouver as well as virtual sessions across BC and Ontario, whichever works better for you.
Do you work with 2SLGBTQ+ couples as well as individuals?
4
Yes. I work with both individuals and couples, including those in ethically non-monogamous relationships, polyamorous structures, and other non-traditional relationship configurations. If your relationship doesn't fit the standard mould, that's not a complication here, it's just context.
