Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to know about working with an Intern Counsellor?
I work under the clinical supervision of an experienced Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), and have completed all requirements of my Master of Counselling, with the exception of my practicum (in completion through East Vancouver Counselling). For the duration of my practicum, I’m able to offer low-cost counselling services, making therapy more accessible to you while still providing high-quality care.

What's the difference between a counsellor, psychotherapist, and psychologist?
In British Columbia, the professional designation is that of a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) through the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). This is the equivalent of what may be considered as a “psychotherapist” in other provinces, as they both require the minimum training of a Masters in the field of psychology. Psychologists have a separate designation and have a minimum education requirement of a PhD in their field.

What do I need to know as we start therapy?
We start with a free 20-minute video (or phone) consultation, which you can book here, to get your initial questions answered and discuss how therapy works. From there, sessions can be held either in-person or virtually.
Our initial sessions will be about getting to know your story. This can include family history, impactful moments throughout your life, and close relationships. You’ll begin to experience my approach to therapy from the get-go as we begin to unravel threads, get to know your patterns, and work together to write the next chapters of your story.

How does the sliding scale work?
A sliding scale makes therapy accessible to more people. All you need to do is ask. If the proposed rates don’t allow you to seek the care you need, please let me know and we can determine a rate that will make therapy work for you.
-
Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Intern Counsellors can be covered by certain insurance plans as we are supervised by licensed Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Always check in advance with your insurance provider to determine if this is the case.

What if I need to cancel a session?
You can reschedule or cancel a session up to 24 hours before the scheduled time. If an appointment is cancelled within 24 hours or you don’t arrive within the scheduled time, you will be charged the full session fee.
